Kunwar Singh, also known as Babu Kunwar Singh was a chief organiser of the Indian Rebellion of from the Bhojpur region of Bihar. He was originally the ruler of Jagdishpur estate.^[2] He led a selected band of armed soldiers against the troops under the command of the British East India Company.^[3]

Early life

Kunwar Singh was born on 13 November in Rajput family to Raja Sahabzada Singh and Panchratan Devi, in Jagdishpur in the Indian state of Bihar. He belonged to a cadet branch of the Ujjainiya dynasty which ruled the Jagdishpur principality.^[4] A British judicial officer offered a description of Kunwar Singh and described him as "a tall man, about six feet in height".^[5] He went on to describe him as having a broad face with an aquiline nose.
