John Barth (born in 1930) is an American writer, known as one of the leading proponents of "black humor" along with Kurt Vonnegut, Donald Barthelme, Joseph Heller, and Thomas Pynchon. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After completing high school, he studied at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music before transferring to Johns Hopkins University, where he studied English. After graduating, John Barth pursued a career in teaching.
